The spin-a-thon was another great event that raised great money for this great cause.  Congratulations to all those tough Vancouver Police members that stuck it out and a special mention to our sponsors including Elete for powering us through!

The Art Event 2008

Breath.  The final in a series of three original limited edition prints by renowned artist Andy Everson celebrating Triathlon and the fight against cancer.

The SeriesAndy Everson

On February 27, 2008, the 3rd print in the series by Andy Everson was released in a gala event at the stunning Inuit Gallery of Vancouver.

The third print is inspired by swimming, the third discipline of triathlon.  Sales of this print were very brisk an it will likely sell out before Ironman in August as there are a lot of collectors who have purchased the first 2 in the series.

The event began with our emcee reviewing the history of this project and the success it had achieved so far.  The evening continued with the unveiling of the new limited edition print accompanied by rich cultural dance performed by Andy and his family.

Andy and Family

Guests were greeted at the door by police in dress uniforms and enjoyed a great selection of wines generously provided by Rosemount Estates and other light refreshments.

Police in Dress Uniforms

There were touching video explorations of Ironman, the 3 original pieces by Andy and the battle against cancer and the evening ended with a surprise performance by Riley Inge (formally appearing on-stage with the Temptations).  In the end, over 1/2 of the limited edition prints were spoken for and we expect it will sell out by the end of August when Ironman Canada takes place.

A huge thank you to all of our guests, Andy and his family, Melanie and the wonderful (and tolerant) team at the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver, and to all of the team members that worked so hard to make this a tremendous success!

Arleta and Christy Host Another Successful AuctionLuongo Jersey

Christy and Arleta added a Silent Auction to their annual Christmas Wine and Cheese party with all proceeds benefiting the Cops for Cancer – Team Ironman.

"We had over 50 items to bid on" reported Arleta. "One of the higher profile items was an autographed Roberto Luongo jersey.  Unfortunately Roberto was unable to attend the event due to his “busy” NHL schedule….but we thank him for the jersey."  In addition, there was a 50/50 draw and wine was available by donation.

The event was a huge success thanks to the hard work, dedication and support of many of Arleta and Christy's friends and family.  All of the team BC members join Arleta and Christy in expressing our appreciation for their support and thank them for contributing to the success of this event which raised $4,000!

Our Second Graco Stroller Winner!

Our second winner of a Graco Leisure Jogger Travel System Stroller is Sheeba Faqih of Burnaby.  Sheeba bought a ticket from team member Michelle Ball and her name was drawn at the Desert 1/2 Iron in Osoyoos.

A very pregnant Sheeba picked up her prize and was thrilled that it was actually one of the choices they had been considering.  I can personally assure her that she will be amazed at just how well designed this unit is!  We have been torture testing the same stroller since the spring and our 4 year old has been no match.  Hundreds of kilometers of Ironman training runs and 4 days of race support and the unit is without any signs of wear.  Most amazing is how quickly it breaks down and stores in the trunk of a Corolla. Along with luggage for 2 and race gear, the Graco Stroller was perfect for a recent trip to the Vineman 70.3 Half Iron in California and back!

Thanks again to Graco for supplying us with these amazing units and thank you all for helping us raise over $3,000 to be added to the Team BC total for 2008.

Our First Graco Stroller Winner

Our first winner of a Graco Leisure Jogger Travel System Stroller is Jim Winter of Coquitlam.  Jim entered at the recent Oliver Half Ironman and was thrilled when we contacted him with the news this week.

If you are interested in buying a draw ticket for the second of these outstanding strollers, there is still time!  E-mail Buffy@IroncopsBC.com for tickets or see us at the upcoming Desert Half Iron in Osoyoos, BC on the weekend of July 8, 2007.  Remember all of you who bought  tickets for the first draw are still eligible for the second draw on July 8.

Randy Wilson Shaves for the Cause!

On Friday May 25, Okanagon Ironcop team member Randy Wilson dropped his locks at the KAL RATS Vernon Tri Club Barbeque.  You can see from the photo's that his normally happy demeanor decayed significantly as his hair was removed!

Congratulations Randy on raising $935 for the Canadian Cancer Society.  If you have had the occasion to meet Randy, you will already know that selfless acts are common for this team member and it should come as no surprise that he has already raised nearly $4,500 in his 2008 Ironman Canada Campaign.

On going donations can always be made on this web site. Simply link to Team BC Donations and scroll down to Randy's bio and the secure donation page.

Along with many volunteering duties this year, watch for Randy racing at the Desert Half Iron in July and Ironman Canada on August 26th, 2007.

The Art Event 2007

Footprints.  Another outstanding original limited edition print by renowned artist Andy Everson.

Andy and his family provided an amazing introduction to his new print, "Footprints".  Inspired by Triathlon and the run as well as the battle with cancer, this moving art original was released to over 100 truly impressed guests.

The evening included an exhibition with Andy, his daughter and son drumming and chanting in support of his brothers incredible dance. Guests enjoyed a great selection of wines generously provided by Rosemount Estates and other light refreshments.

There were touching video explorations of Ironman, the 2 original pieces by Andy and the battle against cancer and the evening ended with a surprise performance by Riley Inge (formally appearing on-stage with the Temptations).  In the end, over 1/3 of the limited edition prints were spoken for and we expect it will sell out by the end of August when Ironman Canada takes place.

A huge thank you to all of our guests, Andy and his family, Melanie and the wonderful (and tolerant) team at the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver, and to all of the team members that worked so hard to make this a tremendous success!

The Journey for 2008 Begins...

Cops for Cancer - Team Ironman is a group of Police Officers and friends who race Ironman Canada officially as Ironcops every second year.  In 2006, the 180 members of the Ironcops raised over $1.3 Million for the Canadian Cancer Society with 134 Ironcops starting Ironman Canada on August 27 and 119 completing the grueling course in under 17 hours.

The Head Shave Fund Raiser in Vancouver, 2006

The team  from across Canada is back for the 2008 campaign with several of the members choosing to also race Ironman Canada in 2007 as this is the 25th anniversary of one of the world's most difficult and highly respected Ironman Events.

Quick Facts:

  • There are teams across Canada and this is the web home for Team BC.
  • We are now building the Ironcops Team for 2008 and would love to have you race with us (e-mail us through the "Contact Us" link to the left).
  • An Ironcop is a Police Officer or anyone who has been affected by Cancer that feels they can make a difference through fundraising, training and racing.
  • Cops for Cancer is the largest independent fundraising group for the Canadian Cancer Society.
  • An Ironman is a triathlon with a swim of 3.8 km, a bike of 180 km and a marathon run of 42.2 km that must be completed in under 17 hours.
  • This experience will change you forever.

Thoughts from the start line, Ironman Canada

"...It does not happen often that we understand the full magnitude of an experience at the moment it occurs.  Standing here as dawn paints the sandy cliffs with a tangerine fire I have complete awareness at this moment.  A lone piper drones and, shoulder to shoulder with my teammates and the best in the world, nervousness dissolves into anticipation.

At this moment the months of training are complete.  The fear and self doubt mean nothing.  There are few of us who will ever dream to be here and fewer who will act on that dream.  In the next 17 hours some will fall and many will succeed, but we all share the courage to battle the Ironman.  In this moment I begin to understand the courage that Cancer victims marshal everyday.

I suddenly realize the value of my fundraising and the purpose of the sacrifice it takes to be standing exactly where I am at exactly this moment.  In this moment I become forever a little stronger: and Cancer becomes forever, a little weaker".
