1st Time at Ironman Canada!

Tracy

I have been involved in athletics since I was 6 years old. My Mom let me try what ever I was interested in at the time; Ballet, Tap Dancing, Karate, Figure Skating, Horse Back riding, and finally Soccer. No matter what my endeavor, my Mom’s only rule..”try your best”. Soccer became my passion and I played competitively for many years. I still play today, and while I’m not quite as fast as I used to be, I still love getting out on the field with my team and challenging myself.

Until about 5 ½ years ago, I had zero interest in doing anything long-distance. That is until my brother convinced me to come and watch one of his Triathlon races. I remained skeptical, but soon found myself thinking “hey, I could probably do this too”. Then my partner was also bitten by the Tri-bug and all of a sudden we were talking training schedules and setting race goals. I’ve now completed a number of Sprint Triathlon’s, a half Ironman, a whole bunch of running races, a few half marathons and a full marathon.

In 2004, I embarked on yet another venture; I quit my 13 year career in Corrections and became a Vancouver Police Officer. I knew that I wanted to compete with the IronCops for Cancer team at Ironman Canada.  Every year, since 2002, I’ve watched the Ironman in Penticton from the sidelines and would often joke about registering. Now was the time to step up to the plate. I started to take account of all the people I knew who had been affected by Cancer, and the results were overwhelming. The disease does not discriminate.

I know my journey to Ironman is going to be difficult, challenging, exhausting and frustrating and there will be times I might want to quit, but I know that I will stay motivated when I think about the strength and courage shown by Uncle Michael, Uncle Alf, Peter, Faye, Patti, Dawn, Lynn, Tom and Travis when they battled their Cancer, quitting wasn’t an option for them.

My goal is to run across the finish line with a smile on my face, holding my kids’ hands, and taking pride in the fact that I did it for a great cause!

Thanks for your support!
