Second Time at Ironman Canada!

What convinced you to join the Cops for Cancer Ironman Team?

Ever since I started watching Ironman I’ve thought about racing with the IronCops team but for the longest time thought you had to be on a police force to join.  When I learned that 40% of IronCops are civilians, I decided to get involved.   It’s a great cause and the idea of having people yell “Go IronCop!” is much more motivating than “Go number two thousand one hundred nineteen!”.

What obstacles do you feel you will need to overcome?

Making sure my girlfriend doesn’t forget what I look like during training season.

Do you have any specific goals for your Ironman experience?

Not walking during the marathon.

What is your athletic background?

I’ve always had a hard time committing to one sport, so triathlon is perfect.  I think I was on 6 sports teams in junior high and in high school I had to quit the basketball team because it was cutting into my ski time.  University was climbing in winter and beach volleyball in summer.  Since then I’ve dabbled with kayaking, scuba, and dangerous games of bocce ball.

Do you have a personal reason for taking on this challenge, or are you dedicating your efforts to anyone in particular?

One of my best friends, Rob Sivacoe, was diagnosed with cancer when I was 15 years old.  Rob inspired almost everyone he met really did live every day of his life as though it was his last.  He passed away in his early twenties but left a legacy of working hard, playing harder and not wasting time standing still. About the same time Rob passed away, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.  During her long battle with the disease, it amazed me how often new cancer treatments were always becoming available.  Some of them didn’t seem to have an effect, too many of them had side effects but most of them really worked.  In fact, they worked so well that she lived long enough to see us graduate high school and university, to see retirement, and to meet her grandchildren.  Without people raising money for cancer, a lot of the treatments used to keep my mom alive longer wouldn’t have been available so thanks to everyone taking part in IronCops and every other cancer fundraiser around.
