Why Raise money through the Cops For Cancer Ironman Team?

In the last few years my family and friends have been particularly hit hard by cancer with two having died from cancer, my uncle and my aunt. Another aunt and cousin are currently fighting cancer. But what really struck home was my dad's death. My dad died suddenly on October 16th 2006, not of cancer, but of a massive fatal heart attack. When I went home for the funeral I found out that my father's best friend, Henry Balder--a man who has been like a second father to me--had just been diagnosed with cancer and was about to undergo Chemotherapy. Henry had just lost one of his biggest supporters when he needed my dad the most. I realized that while losing my dad was tough, seeing his best friend struggle with cancer was really tough.

Henry is now in remission and is currently winning the fight.

I decided that raising money to fight cancer and thereby helping those that are struck by it, is something that I wanted to be a part of. As I have been a part of the triathlon scene since 2001 the Ironcops Team seemed like a great way to raise money while doing something I love to do.

What obstacles do you feel you will need to overcome?

My biggest obstacle will be making sure I do the consistent training to complete the race. Over the years I have struggled to maintain my fitness. I know that Ironman races are all about putting in the miles to finish the race. It is the same for the fundraising, I know that I need to have a consistent steady fundraising to help me raise the $5000.

Do you have any specific goals for your Ironman experience?

I want to get to the finish line through a consistent training regime so that I don't stress out my family and friends too much with crazy training.

If I had to name a finish time, I would like to break 11 hours.

What is your athletic background?

I grew up as a runner and competed in Track & Field and Cross Country at 6 provincial championships. After high school I stopped racing for couple of years and intended to try out triathlons, but couldn't as I didn't have a bike. During the 2000 Olympic Games, Simon Whitfield won the opening event, the men's triathlon. After the race my older brother called me up and told me, "did you see who won the triathlon?", I said, "yeah." Shane then reminded me that he used to beat Simon all the time running races when he was in high school. Seeing and talking about triathlon racing got me really interested in racing in triathlons. In 2001, I completed in a small sprint triathlon in Halifax, Nova Scotia and I have been hooked ever since.

Today I also race in road cycling events and road running races. As part of my preparation for Ironman Canada 2008, I plan to compete in the 2007 Royal Victoria Marathon. I also plan on racing olympic to half-ironman distance triathlons this year and next.
