1st Time at Ironman Canada!

During a recent trip to Hawaii, a young man, wise beyond his years and aLora

successful Ironman finisher, happily shared his experiences, advice and training tips with myself and two friends, who have also signed up for Ironman for the first time.  One of the most profound tidbits he shared was that the race is only 30% physical and 70% mental.  I silently agreed with him, holding the vision of me crossing the finish line with a smile on my face, much like my brother, Roman, who’s my true inspiration.

I have always been a runner, participating in several fun runs, a leg of the Haney to Harrison and a couple of half marathons, and in May 2000, with the support of family and friends, I completed my first full marathon in Vancouver, BC.  My brother was at the finish line, brimming with joy and so proud of what I thought was a meager accomplishment compared to what he had gone through.  He recently had been leaving behind a trying period in his life, enduring years of unthinkable

trials and tribulations.  He was in complete awe of my accomplishment, which at the time made me uncomfortable.  I recall saying to him “You can do it too!!”

Well he did!  Five years later he completed his first Ironman in Penticton, and in 2007 he qualified for the World Long Course in Almeres Netherlands in Aug 2008.  I cried as he passed the finish line with the biggest smile on his face, shaving off more than 30 min from his previous time.  I am so proud of him.  To me, my brother is living proof that with strength, courage, perseverance and visualizing a goal, you can make Ironman an accomplishment!

In 2004, the best thing in my life happened… my biggest fan, my son Nicholas was born.  He is one of the most positive, happy kids I know (I’m a tad biased).  As I work full-time as a police officer and am a part-time mom, training comes in any form, however I can make it work!  I thought I’d allow my son to be part of my training, so I bought him a kid’s sized stationary bike so he could spin with me at home on those cold, rainy Vancouver days.

Everyone knows someone who battles or has lost a battle with cancer.  My family on both my Mom’s and Dad’s side has battled with various forms of cancer.  I am passionate about raising money for a cause that one day I am sure

there will be a cure for.  I am proud to be part of Ironcops for Cancer and look forward to seeing you in Penticton!  Thanks for your support.

P.S.  Ask a cop and they’ll never admit to it, but yes, some of us eat donuts from time to time….
