 First Time at Ironman Canada!

I am honored to be a civilian member of the Cops for Cancer, Team Ironman BC, and to join their efforts to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.  I’ll admit that I’ve also joined to have some fun along the way!

This charity is close to my heart as I have, like many, been affected by cancer.  My exposure to cancer happened when I was eight years old.  Although I did not fully understand it at the time, I understood even at a young age the devastating effects of the disease.  My cousin Garth died of leukemia at three years of age.  The few memories that I do have of him, are more vivid than any other memories I can recall from that period of my childhood.  I can remember my mom asking me what I thought we should take to Garth at Children’s Hospital.  “A gold fish!” I remember replying.  A gold fish to make him laugh and smile.   I’ve joined this team in memory of my cousin.

My journey for Ironman now has begun.
And on top of my goals to swim, bike and run;
“I will raise awareness, and funds, and of course have some fun!”
And so if you please I’ll need your help to get it done.

It may be hard to compete in the heat,
But I will try my best to stay up on my feet.
I now must get used to Gatorade to drink, gels to eat,
And oh not to mention – that most uncomfortable bike seat!

Most of my friends think I’m crazy, and my family too,
But they know this is something I am most inspired to pursue.
My husband, Joel, you are my hero. I really want to thank you…
For being my best friend, and without you, I am not sure what I would do.

My mantras for the year, when I’m feeling tired and sore,
Are “I will” and “I can” and “Let’s go out for more!”
From start to finish and finish to start,
From street to street and shore to shore.
In memory of Garth, I am certain I will soar.

The Canadian Cancer Society reported that in 2006, on average, 2,944 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer every week.  Your donation, no matter how large or small, will do some good for us all.  Thank you, and be sure to have a fun day!!!

“Don’t cry because it’s over.  Smile because it happened.”  Dr. Seuss
