Life is full of surprises and obstacles. For these challenges we find our way - some we face head-on and others we call our dreams and goals. Four years ago, Ironman would have been an unpleasant obstacle for me. I heard people were running marathons, swimming in funny suits and biking in spandex pants. I would never believe that once I try these three sports for myself, I would fall in love with the sport called Triathlon.

Who would have imagined that a few years later, I would be standing with two thousand other triathletes at a beach in Penticton, crying into my goggles and thinking that whatever happens on the course will be a result of hard work and dedication. Since the Ironman, I am very appreciative of what this race can offer to a person with a non-athletic background.

Ironman is not just a race – it is journey! A journey of learning, sharing and exploring!

While training for my first Ironman 2005, through the North Shore Triathlon Club I met an incredible athlete – a person with a great sense of humour, fast legs and some incredible race results behind his belt.

To my surprise, this Ironman was soon facing a difficult battle – a battle with cancer. The cancer in the end took him away from all the people that loved him dearly, and from all the people to whom he was not only a great triathlete but also a mentor. I myself didn’t know Rob that well since I couldn’t keep up with guys like him; nevertheless, his condition left me thinking. Why such an incredible, strong, healthy person had to deal with such unfortunate illness? Why shouldn’t we be able to know more about this scary illness that so many people are affected by? Is there any way I can help?

Cops For Cancer provides me with an opportunity to pursue two things I deeply care about – training for triathlons and helping people battling with cancer.
